Upcycling – FIMO vases with leaf metal

Upcycling – old cans become pretty FIMO soft vases
Decorations with flowers are always the most beautiful – the flowers are especially beautiful in stylish homemade vases. With an empty tin can, FIMO soft and leaf metal you can conjure up a beautiful DIY decoration in no time at all, which is also perfect as a gift! Upcycling – FIMO vases with leaf metal.

1. Knead three blocks of mint FIMO soft until soft and then roll into a ball. Roll out to an even thickness of about 0.5 – 1 cm using the acrylic roller, ensuring that the width of the FIMO soft sheet is about the same as the height of your tin.

Tip: Work in progress and left-over material should beprotected against sun and heat and can be stored in a screw-top jar or in cling film to protect it from dust and dirt.

2. Lay the tin on the FIMO soft sheet and cut the left edge of the sheet straight using the blade.

3. Now wrap the FIMO soft around the tin and cut to size.
Roll the tin backwards and forwards along your working surface, applying gentle pressure to close the join and ensure that the FIMO soft sticks firmly to the tin.

5. Smooth the “seam” with your modelling tool until the join is invisible.
Then harden the covered tin in the oven at 110°C / 230°F for 30 minutes and allow to cool completely.

6. Apply size for leaf metal to the lower third of the tin using the paintbrush and leave for about 15 minutes to become tacky.

7. Now take the leaf metal and apply it to the tin. It will only stick to the surfaces where you have applied size. Brush back and forth over the surface with a dry paintbrush to remove any excess.
Tip: It creates a particularly pretty effect if you apply more leaf metal to the lower area and gradually less as you move upwards.
Finally, apply gloss varnish using the paintbrush to protect the leaf metal.
